Leadership

Realizing a complex bespoke estate project requires real leadership. It needs a quarterback. It needs someone with a buck-stops-here attitude. It needs drive and an attention to detail. It needs a focus on timelines and deliverables. And it needs someone to wrap their arms around all the players, all the agencies, all the moving parts.
We are that leader. We are here to lead and inspire and to crack the whip when needed. We are here to get your project to the goal line. You are probably a leader yourself and likely too busy and have too many other priorities to take the lead in the realization of your home. That’s why we are here, for you.
It takes a small army of different engineers, landscape architects and consultants to bring an estate home into being. Many of them are technically excellent, but not great project managers and not great communicators. We assemble the right team with the right expertise and then we manage them so you don’t have to.

High Touch Service for Homes

You are probably used to a high touch level of service in many aspects of your life but we can tell you that level of service is hard to find in the field of architecture. What does high touch service mean to Winder Gibson? Responsiveness. Great listening skills. Detail oriented. Clear and thorough replies. An openness to feedback and ideas. It sounds simple, but this is where many firms fall short. Our years of work in bespoke residential design has necessitated developing a high touch service method and this is something that’s even more important when designing estate sized homes.
For our custom estate clients, high touch means laying out clear expectations and deadlines and then meeting them. It means answering the phone when you call. It means prioritizing your project and always having you feel important to us, because you genuinely are. The experience of this type of service has been a revelation to our clients,

Sustainability

We believe that incorporating sustainability principles is just good architecture. But what does sustainability mean to you and for your home and what options are available? Winder Gibson Architects is here to guide you through that journey and respond to your specific goals. Our deep well of sustainable practices, details, materials, systems and techniques allows us to smoothly integrate sustainability at all levels of your project in a way that is bespoke and meaningful.
Perhaps for you, sustainability is about ensuring a good future for your children and extended family to inherit. You wish to be a good steward of the world, both immediately around you and at large. You want to understand how the decisions we make together about your home impact all of that and want to understand the cost and functional implications of those decisions as well.
Or you may have a strong focus on a healthy home. This might mean air quality and the healthy impacts of various materials and systems.

Beauty

It is hard to underestimate the way that living in a beautiful environment brings small and large joy to every day of your life. Beauty can be found in the materials inside and out. It is in the overall form and composition. It is in the play of light in a space and in the rhythm of life lived there. Beauty can connect us with memories and emotions. It is different for everyone, but certain moments of beauty are universal.
Winder Gibson Architects’ Estate practice exhibits a broad stylistic diversity of contemporary and transitional styles. We work closely with our clients to understand what touches that sweet spot of beauty for them, while also exposing them to ideas they might not have seen before. It’s a very personal journey and for that reason, each bespoke estate is different. And is much loved by that client. We are active curators of great ideas and will always ensure the whole project feels unified and right.
Beauty is meant to be shared. Inviting family,

Bespoke

Architecture is a social pattern. It guides us, gently or strongly, in the way we interact with each other and even with ourselves. A round dining table inspires a different kind of conversation than a long thin one.
Winder Gibson Architects’ Estate practice focuses on the design of homes with great social flow, improving the lives of those who use them. Every project is bespoke and tailored to the needs and life of our clients. We develop the social pattern by getting to know you. From this, we generate a home and grounds that embody that social pattern. Humans are inherently adaptable but the creation of a bespoke estate is an incredible opportunity for you. When the way you want to live is in alignment with the space you inhabit, friction is removed and a beautiful life is possible.
There are two overlapping pieces of feedback that we get again and again from our clients months or even years after their projects are finished. It is a joy to live there. And everything just works so beautifully.

Responsive Fee Structure

Just like every project has its own proforma, we understand that every developer has a different approach to services. Our fee structure will be responsive to your needs. First, we sit down with you to understand the role you need your architect to play and talk through who else is going to be involved in entitlement, permitting, neighborhood relations and leading the team through construction documents. Our goal is to find how and where we can help and where you already have your team lined up. Second, we develop a project-specific fee structure that reflects the job you actually need us to do. You will find that we are always competitive and reasonable and our team is always going to bring a high touch approach to your project, regardless of our role.

Boutique to Large-Scale

The primary focus at Winder Gibson Architects is working with developers where we can build successful relationships. The project size is secondary. Because of our firm size, we can profitably take on projects that are smaller or more atypical than our peer firms. Skinny site, no problem. State Density Bonus, we’ve got you. Sloped topography, sure thing. Our boutique approach applies the same value to every project, driving forward towards your success.
We love large projects too. Mapping out the complex social flow and community opportunities on a 250+ unit building plays right into our strengths. For larger projects we manage the unit blend and aim for efficiency with consolidated unit types. We integrate code requirements as well as best practices for circulation and distribution of services. Our architects will coordinate with the consultant team of engineers, landscape architects and other disciplines to a smartly realized end product.

High Touch Service

High touch service is common in high-end single family residential work but so rare in multifamily development. Responsiveness. Great listening skills. Detail oriented. Clear and thorough replies. An openness to feedback and ideas. It sounds simple, but this is where many firms fall short. Our work with homeowners has necessitated developing a high touch service method and this is something we carry through to all project types.
For our multifamily development clients, high touch means laying out clear expectations and deadlines and then meeting them. It means answering the phone when you call. It means prioritizing your project and always having you feel important to us, because you genuinely are. The experience of this type of service has been a revelation to our multifamily developers, truly setting us apart from any firm they’ve worked with.
Part of delivering this service is having a tight-knit team of dedicated professionals. Because of our size, you are always with the A-team.

Architects Plus

At the heart of our practice is an understanding that in order for Winder Gibson to be a success, our clients and their projects must first be a success. That is why it is critical to begin each project with an understanding of what success looks like, beyond the physical design. Once we define this we can work with you to do whatever it takes to realize the project goals. The last thing we want is to design a beautiful building, pull permits and have the project dead-filed because it ultimately isn’t worth pursuing.
When working on multifamily projects, we work closely with you to understand the proforma. We know the business of development and consider ourselves your partner in making the project viable. We develop a building model to extract the kind of data you need in order to ensure the project is on solid economic footing. We know that it makes sense to run multiple models and try out different formulae. We use this exercise to ensure the design is buildable and meets permit requirements.
